The reasons for trouble swallowing could include more than just one singular thing. When you experience a hard time moving food through your esophagus, it may be due to a particular problem that has gone undiagnosed, a food allergy, or inflammation in your esophagus. Here are some reasons that trouble swallowing may be occurring:

  • Hypothyroidism
  • Achalasia, a disorder that occurs if the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) becomes paralyzed
  • Scarring from acid reflux
  • Foreign objects in the esophagus or throat
  • Esophageal contractions
  • Esophageal rings (bands of tissue that block the inside of the esophagus)
  • Nervous system conditions

Dysphagia may affect individuals of different ages, although it is more often found in older patients. Speak with your digestive health specialist to find out more about the different causes and the treatment options that are accessible to you.

Problems swallowing may denote a variety of conditions. When dealing with dysphagia, it is important to receive medical care as soon as you're able to make sure that you can eat and breathe normally. The main signs of difficulty swallowing include:

  • Food coming back up into your throat
  • Continual acid reflux
  • Pain in the esophagus while swallowing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Being unable to swallow
  • A feeling of food staying in your esophagus
  • Hoarseness

Request a consultation to talk with a gastroenterologist in New Orleans, LA today if you endure any mix of the above-stated issues routinely. It is vital to see your GI provider if weight loss or throwing up occurs with your difficulty swallowing.

The specific way to treat dysphagia starts by pinpointing the cause of the trouble. If the cause turns out to be food allergies, the right steps will be taken to reduce inflammation and you will be asked to stay away from consuming the food. In the case of inflammation in the lining of the esophagus, our providers will work to identify the root cause, establishing if it is related to a bacterial or viral infection (infectious esophagitis), or injury related to acid reflux. For muscle contractions in the throat, our digestive health specialists might prescribe muscle relaxers or surgery. Allow the gastroenterologists at Metropolitan Gastroenterology Associates to work alongside you to rehabilitate your swallowing strength.

I would HIGHLY recommend Dr. Persich to any friend, family, or coworker. When I first started out going to Metropolitan Gastroneurology Assosiates, I wasn’t pleased at first with another doctor and then God and my instincts led me to trying with another doctor and it being Dr. Persich. BEST DECISION I could of ever made. Since then I have been nothing but happy and getting answers. The overall office is so nice and helpful to from receptionists, nurses, and billing. He as the doctor though is amazing, very thorough, caring, respectful, him or his Nurse Ms. Susan always returns your call right away, he will even call you to talk to you about your health on his own time after hours, and goes out of his way to test or find other options to make you as the patient feel most comfortable. I am probably one of his hardest and annoying patients because of my case but yet he has not given up on me, still yet! Go to him while you can and you will not be disappointed. Overall after all he has done for me, I learned a lot about myself but the body as well and my case all THANKS to Dr. Persich!
